Let’s create BetaGroup Tel-Aviv!
During this trip, we discovered a country which transcends anything I’ve ever read or heard in the media! If I had to choose one word to describe this trip to Israel, it would be “innovation.”
After the best sights of Jerusalem, Haifa and Acres, we discovered Tel Aviv, a city of 400,000 inhabitants, heart of the Silicon Wadi and Israeli innovation. Tel-Aviv is a city that breaths youth and diversity and makes you want to be creative and create your company, despite difficult living conditions due to the high cost of living ( including housing) and inadequate public transportation network.
I was so grateful to the Israeli Embassy in Belgium to have proposed as representatives two members of the startup scene : Karen Boers from Startups.be and I from BetaGroup. It was scheduled to visit the incubators in Silicon Wadi, but after an unexpected on our agenda, already overbooked, the “Startup City Tour” was canceled. Unfortunate, because innovation and entrepreneurship in the field of new technology are revolutionizing the world!!
Israel is THE country for the startups, the country where there is the most tech startups per capita. The three key areas of the Israelien tech scene are security, “cleantech” and biotechnology. However there are also well-known startups there that many of us are using everyday such as Wix. Finally, to promote innovation, the Army even offers to young computer engeneers to work on their own applications or technologies during their military service, but also offers them to use them afterwoods on their return to civilian life!
But the main issue for this country of promising ideas is a limited market. Indeed, all these startups have no alternative but to sell their products and services abroad, primarily in the US market, but why not in Europe?!
This is the challenge that we have decided to study at BetaGroup: finding ways to strengthen relations between the Israelian and Belgian startups. We are currently working on the etablishment of a BetaGroup antenna in Tel-Aviv for June 2015!
